Christopher Batalon
My name is Christopher Batalon—you can call me Chris. I am a fully licensed mental health therapist who specializes in depression, anxiety, men's issues, identity issues, and multi-cultural issues. Although these are my specialties, the biggest measure of success in therapy when dealing with any issue, is trust and connection. If you have a therapist that you do not connect with, the change process can feel nonexistent. Connection can come in various forms. For instance, you share an area of the U.S. where you live and speak the same cultural language, or the person you are sitting across from simply looks like you. Whatever the case may be, a powerful connection is representation, and working with someone that you feel a strong connection with will greatly elevate the therapeutic process.

Dear fellow
traveler,
In the book The Gift of Therapy, Dr. Irvan Yalom suggests that the therapist and client are actually “fellow travelers” both on a journey for self discovery, emphasizing a collaborative and empathetic approach within sessions. It also challenges the hierarchical idea that the therapist is a detached expert who can give their clients quality advice when navigating life’s challenges. Rather, my role as your therapist would be one of a companion walking alongside you while fostering connection and growth together. This shared humanity highlights that we both grapple with life’s complexities while also fostering a sense of shared experience and vulnerability. It also gives way for deeper levels of empathy and connection while creating a sense of reciprocal learning. I say this with hopes to promote authenticity within our sessions together as I have found that this approach of walking alongside a fellow traveler allows the client to have their goals of therapy met sooner and in a more engaging way. So when you’re ready, I’ll be here, waiting to walk alongside you.
What to expect from BOT:
First, a cornerstone of any good therapist/client relationship is the right fit. I will be completely transparent and say that clients who see the most improvement with me are often men of color. I pride myself in filling this niche and allowing space for constituents who fit this mold because statistically speaking, there are not very many males of color within my role, and clients who identify as such generally tend to connect with me on a deeper level. I also often utilize a holistic approach when creating treatment plan recommendations, not just focusing on mental health, but on the physical aspect as well. (I’m also a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and really enjoy talking about physical fitness if that fits the clients needs).
Second, I am a behaviorist. In session, we will talk about several things (i.e. history of trauma, upbringing, current relationships, etc.) all of which often culminate to individuals creating maladaptive coping behaviors. As a behaviorist, I work with clients to teach them skills either cognitively or physically that aim to create positive coping mechanisms so that they are able to live a life they define as being worthwhile. I also recognize that every client is different and will work with each individual to figure out what it is they want in session.
